A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's key government projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was intimately linked to his government's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a significant increase of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an rapid rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in full adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
